Patriarchal Blessings

1). “I have great confidence in the patriarchs and in their blessings. When the patriarch is a faithful Latter-day Saint and remains close to the Lord and is a student of the scriptures, the promises which he makes under his special authority and calling will be fulfilled, if the recipient of the blessing is faithful and true.”
Spencer W. Kimball, “The Foundations of Righteousness,” Conference Talk, October 1977

2). “None of us knows the wisdom of the Lord. We do not know in advance exactly how He would get us from where we are to where we need to be, but He does offer us broad outlines in our patriarchal blessings. We encounter many bumps, bends, and forks in the road of life that leads to the eternities.”
James E. Faust, Where Do I Make My Stand?” Conference Talk, October 2004

3). “‘Patriarchal blessings,’ wrote the First Presidency in a letter to stake presidents, ‘contemplate an inspired declaration of the lineage of the recipient and, when so moved upon by the Spirit, an inspired and prophetic statement of the life mission of the recipient, together with such blessings, cautions and admonitions as the patriarch may be prompted to give for the accomplishment of such life’s mission, it being always made clear that the realization of all promised blessings is conditioned upon faithfulness to the gospel of our Lord, whose servant the patriarch is’ (First Presidency Letter to stake presidents, 28 June 1958).”
Thomas S. Monson “Your Patriarchal Blessing: A Liahona of Light,” Conference Talk, October 1986

4). “A patriarchal blessing is a revelation to the recipient, even a white line down the middle of the road, to protect, inspire, and motivate activity and righteousness. A patriarchal blessing literally contains chapters from your book of eternal possibilities. I say eternal, for just as life is eternal, so is a patriarchal blessing. What may not come to fulfillment in this life may occur in the next. We do not govern God’s timetable. ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.’”
Thomas S. Monson “Your Patriarchal Blessing: A Liahona of Light,” Conference Talk, October 1986

5). "…A patriarchal blessing is "sacred, confidential, and personal." It is a personal revelation to the recipient. Like the scriptures, it is given under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and should be read and interpreted under the influence of that same spirit. The meaning and significance of a patriarchal blessing will be taught line upon line in the course of time by the power of the same Spirit that inspired the blessing."
Dallin H. Oaks, “Patriarchal Blessings,” Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, January 2005

6). Sometimes someone will worry because a promise made in a patriarchal blessing is not yet fulfilled. For instance, a blessing may indicate that a member will be married, and they do not find a companion. That does not mean that the blessing will go unfulfilled. It is well to know that things happen in the Lord’s due time, not always in ours. Things of an eternal nature have no boundaries. From the premortal existence to our existence beyond the veils of death, our life is an eternal life."
– Boyd K. Packer, “The Stake Patriarch,” Conference Talk, October 2002

7). "The patriarch has no blessing of his own to give; the blessing is the Lord’s to give. God knows our spirits; He knows our strengths and weaknesses. He knows our capabilities and our potential. Our patriarchal blessings indicate what the Lord expects of us and what our potential can be. Our blessings can encourage us when we are discouraged, strengthen us when we are fearful, comfort us when we sorrow, give us courage when we are filled with anxiety, lift us up when we are weak in spirit."
– James E. Faust, “Your Patriarchal Blessing,” New Era, November 2005

8). “Your patriarchal blessing, with its declaration of lineage, will link you to these fathers and be more meaningful to you. Your love and gratitude for your ancestors will increase. Your testimony of and conversion to the Savior will become deep and abiding. And I promise you will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary. As you participate in and love this holy work, you will be safeguarded in your youth and throughout your lives.”
Elder David A. Bednar, “The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn,” Conference Talk, October 2011

9). “A patriarchal blessing is the inspired and prophetic statement of your life’s mission together with blessings, cautions, and admonitions as the patriarch may be prompted to give.”
President Ezra Taft Benson, “To the “Youth of the Noble Birthright,” Conference Talk, April 1986

10). “A patriarchal blessing from an ordained patriarch can give us a star to follow, which is a personal revelation from God to each individual. If we follow this star, we are less likely to stumble and be misled.”
James E. Faust, “Priesthood Blessings,” Conference Talk, October 1995
